"Carver" loves the feel of graphite. The smooth, dark, silky substance floats to the floor in contrast to the hard chips of wood that once surrounded the lead. The lead retains the use for which it was designed, but the wood is useless, only to be thrown into the landfill. It will turn into atoms, finding a use in some other dimension, years and years from now.

Carver bares a large section of lead, choosing a subject, and brings the tool close to the section, gently, gently, lest the lead break and the task must begin again.

The subject begun, finally finished, Carver lovingly positions each pencil for a debut performance to the world's eye, choosing an optimum exposure and contrast to give maximum effect.

With a sigh, Carver begins the task again. Art enthusiasts continually demand more. "If I try to do that piece all over again," Carver says, "people won't watch what I do. They'll turn away, and call me a one-trick pony."
